Magpie attack on Cyclist - 17 Centennial Pl, Little Mountain QLD 4551
Surprisingly accurate Magpie, got my ear before I even knew I was under attack. When I went out later and he again managed to get the same ear. I've only been in the country for 3 weeks but can honestly say didn't expect the cycling hazards to be coming from above, might need a new way to work.

Magpie attack on Cyclist - 14 Centennial Pl, Little Mountain QLD 4551
This Magpie is more aggressive than one's I've encountered before. I have cycled through at least 10 years of Magpie seasons and this is the first bird that has actively sought out to attack any gap in my cycling helmet. One bitten ear with a superficial cut but I'd advise caution as my helmet prevented it from being worse.

Magpie attack on Cyclist - Adamstown Station, Adamstown NSW 2289
Not swooped riding south on eastern side of road earlier, but swooped by magpie about 8 times riding north between roundabout and level crossing. Flew at the back of my ears, alternating between sides, and drew blood.

Magpie attack on Cyclist - Hassall T-Way, Wetherill Park NSW 2164
I rode under a low lying branch and heard the bird fluttering overhead and squawking. He had one go at me, but didn't come again once I watched him and spoke (OK, growled ????). However, it's still early, in the season, and he may become worse in coming weeks.

  • If you are swooped while cycling get off of your bicycle, a large number of injuries reported on are caused by accidents where cyclists fall off during an attack.
  • Keep an ear open for their distinctive calls.
  • It is important to try to stay calm, if you panic and flap then this is more likely to appear as aggressive behaviour and provoke a further attack.
  • Wear sun glasses and with large wide-brimmed hat to protect your head and eyes.
  • Face the magpie they tend to attack from behind so facing them should avert an attack. Remember to keep facing the bird as you walk out of their territory some birds will swoop as soon as you look away.

Jonny safe from cycling

I faced off against the M7 magpie and won!

I was on my usual 60km Sunday cycle route, cycling minding my own business when suddenly there was a snapping at my ear. I put my foot to the pedals and sped up, he came back for more and eventually gave up after about 150m.
