Magpie attack on Cyclist - Scrub Rd South near Oakley St, Carindale QLD 4152
Magpie patrolling the bus stop area next to Oakley St Attack occurred on two separate occasions: Swooped overhead regardless of being dismounted or on bicycle. However maintaining eye contact and backing away to a safe distance appears to work. Also appears to be a group of miners on the left side of the road alongside the bushland which chased the magpie away.

Magpie attack on Walker - 197 Brighton Rd, Elwood VIC 3184
Was trying to cross the highway when I heard and felt something behind me - turned to see my first magpie attacker of the season mid-swoop and eyeing me off. I backed away and tried to placate it using a soothing tone but it kept eyeballing me, making warning sounds and attempting to swoop another couple of times while I quickly checked traffic to cross and get away. Eventually safely crossed the road and he thankfully didn't follow me up Fuller Road, unlike others in the past that have kept at me.
Injured:No

Magpie attack on Dog Walker - 260 Carmody Rd, St Lucia QLD 4067
First swoop of the 2019 season, from the Crazed Creature of Carmody Road, divebombing my dog. Based on the experience of the last few seasons, this bird has a massive range, swooping over several large blocks from Carmody Rd to Sir Fred Schonell Drive and from Munro St to Hawken Drive. The attacks last for weeks, but this is a particularly early start. Luckily for some, the targets are usually dogs - other walkers seem to be allowed to pass unmolested.

Swooping Magpie Safety Tips

Below is a short list of safety tips that we've collected over the past 5 seasons from our readers that may help with preventing and avoiding a swooping magpie attack. Visit the Swooping Magpie Safety Tips page a full list of tips!

  • If you are swooped while cycling get off of your bicycle, a large number of injuries reported on magpiealert.com are caused by accidents where cyclists fall off during an attack.
  • Keep an ear open for their distinctive calls.
  • It is important to try to stay calm, if you panic and flap then this is more likely to appear as aggressive behaviour and provoke a further attack.
  • Wear sun glasses and with large wide-brimmed hat to protect your head and eyes.
  • Face the magpie they tend to attack from behind so facing them should avert an attack. Remember to keep facing the bird as you walk out of their territory some birds will swoop as soon as you look away.
  • Warn other people where the magpies are swooping locally by registering the swoops with along with a description on our national mappie map!

Magpies are protected throughout Australia, and it is against the law to kill the birds, collect their eggs, or harm their young. If you feel a magpie is a serious menace, it should be reported to your local council.

Jonny safe from cycling

I faced off against the M7 magpie and won!

I was on my usual 60km Sunday cycle route, cycling minding my own business when suddenly there was a snapping at my ear. I put my foot to the pedals and sped up, he came back for more and eventually gave up after about 150m.
