Magpie attack on Cyclist - MacAlister St, Sale VIC 3850
Swooped by the same cranky boy as last year while cycling to work. He waits on the power lines then once you pass, he bombs you from behind. Has never hit me, but comes very close!

Magpie attack on Walker - 69 Church St, Richmond VIC 3121
Swooped by 2 magpies this morning on the corner of Lincoln and Church street at 7.30 am this morning. Have lived locally in this area for years , and never come across such malicious activity by these birds. They were working together in a coordinated attack and knocked the hat clean off my head, and auctually carried it down the road a bit, dropping it near a rubbish bin. No injuries luckily, but I am very wary about walking home tonight, as these were especially aggressive birds.

Magpie attack on Walker - 15 Hudswell Rd, Perth Airport WA 6105
Just a regular guy trying to cross the road to work. This Angry Bird has swooped me on more than one occasion. The Incident was seen by fellow co-workers who have found some humour in the situation. The area is scarce from high trees which i thought was where they prefer to nest? Maybe its a targeted attack because of my Noisy car? I am thankful for this service and will be able to plan my outdoor activities with confidence from now on. Stay safe out there guys.

Magpie attack on Walker - 139 Chapel St, St Kilda VIC 3182
Didn't happen to me, but saw the guy in front of me get swooped on the walk home today. Didn't hear any noise and think it just barely touched him (although he may have a different story to tell!)

Magpie attack on Walker - 9 The Crescent, Manly NSW 2095
Was walking home when I noticed a magpie on a grass patch across the road minding its own business. As I walked passed I made sure to keep looking at it when another one suddenly flew over my head really low and close just once. When I made my way home I was welcomed by 3 magpies (who I presumed were the same magpies) sitting on a power line watching me as I entered my home.
Injured:No

Reported by:

Magpie attack on Cyclist - 25 Kenton Valley Rd, Lobethal SA 5241
Nasty bugger - smacked me in the back of the helmet and scratched the back of my neck completely out of nowhere. Waved him off, and just when I thought I was past him he had another go and clipped the top of my helmet. He just kept coming and coming well past the initial attack point. Strange to have them this late in the season.
Injured:No

Two swoops. First one wing tapped on the right shoulder gently. Second didn't make contact. Some warning before the first swoop. Been riding in this area for the last 3 years. This is the first time I've been swooped over here.

Magpie attack on Cyclist - 10 Carissa St, Sinnamon Park QLD 4073
Swooped about 3 times by butcher bird. Got off bike and pushed up up the street and the creature swooped me once more as I was pushing. Pretty sure this bird got me before about 4 years ago.

Swooping Magpie Safety Tips

Below is a short list of safety tips that we've collected over the past 5 seasons from our readers that may help with preventing and avoiding a swooping magpie attack. Visit the Swooping Magpie Safety Tips page a full list of tips!

  • If you are swooped while cycling get off of your bicycle, a large number of injuries reported on magpiealert.com are caused by accidents where cyclists fall off during an attack.
  • Keep an ear open for their distinctive calls.
  • It is important to try to stay calm, if you panic and flap then this is more likely to appear as aggressive behaviour and provoke a further attack.
  • Wear sun glasses and with large wide-brimmed hat to protect your head and eyes.
  • Face the magpie they tend to attack from behind so facing them should avert an attack. Remember to keep facing the bird as you walk out of their territory some birds will swoop as soon as you look away.
  • Warn other people where the magpies are swooping locally by registering the swoops with along with a description on our national mappie map!

Magpies are protected throughout Australia, and it is against the law to kill the birds, collect their eggs, or harm their young. If you feel a magpie is a serious menace, it should be reported to your local council.

Jonny safe from cycling

I faced off against the M7 magpie and won!

I was on my usual 60km Sunday cycle route, cycling minding my own business when suddenly there was a snapping at my ear. I put my foot to the pedals and sped up, he came back for more and eventually gave up after about 150m.
