This is the first time I'm being attacked by angry magpie. I thought leaves were falling for the first two swoops :) Until he brought his attacks closer to my ear lol. I dismounted and walked a little and he gave up.

Magpie attack on Cyclist - 736 Deception Bay Rd, Rothwell QLD 4022
I was cycling through the park behind Carls Jr etc travelling north. Red unmodified bicycle helmet.Following walk/bike path through park. Continuous attacks hitting left side of my helmet. I pedalled faster but even as I made it to the clearing the attacks continued up to Morris Rd. Attack only appeared to cease when I fell of my bike as I braked hard to avoid entering the road at full speed. At this point I was already at the walk way beside Morris Rd. The bird may have struck my helmet as many as 10 times, really quick and successive strikes on the left side of helmet.
Injured:No

Magpie attack on Cyclist - 5 Northcote Rd, Glebe NSW 2037
I was walking in Jubilee Park, my Yong soon was on his balance bike. On the path between the child care centre and the canal - maybe 100m from the playground - my young son was a few metres ahead of me when he was swooped. The bird landed and started advancing on him until I got closer, then the bird just stood it's ground. My son said he was pecked, but couldn't tell me where. I think the bird probably hit his helmet.
Injured:No

Magpie attack on Walker - 1 Grove St, Albion QLD 4010
Grove St Maggie is active again. Didn't swoop me walking - but I suggest only because it was too busy swooping cyclists (witnessed two swoops)

Swooping Magpie Safety Tips

Below is a short list of safety tips that we've collected over the past 5 seasons from our readers that may help with preventing and avoiding a swooping magpie attack. Visit the Swooping Magpie Safety Tips page a full list of tips!

  • If you are swooped while cycling get off of your bicycle, a large number of injuries reported on magpiealert.com are caused by accidents where cyclists fall off during an attack.
  • Keep an ear open for their distinctive calls.
  • It is important to try to stay calm, if you panic and flap then this is more likely to appear as aggressive behaviour and provoke a further attack.
  • Wear sun glasses and with large wide-brimmed hat to protect your head and eyes.
  • Face the magpie they tend to attack from behind so facing them should avert an attack. Remember to keep facing the bird as you walk out of their territory some birds will swoop as soon as you look away.
  • Warn other people where the magpies are swooping locally by registering the swoops with along with a description on our national mappie map!

Magpies are protected throughout Australia, and it is against the law to kill the birds, collect their eggs, or harm their young. If you feel a magpie is a serious menace, it should be reported to your local council.

Jonny safe from cycling

I faced off against the M7 magpie and won!

I was on my usual 60km Sunday cycle route, cycling minding my own business when suddenly there was a snapping at my ear. I put my foot to the pedals and sped up, he came back for more and eventually gave up after about 150m.
