First time I heard of this (or rather was faced by it) - a bird took off from the sidewalk seemingly flying past my head, and then went straight for my eye with its beak! Completely unprovoked and without any young ones visible around - ended up having a bleeding eyelid. These should be actively protected against by the council!
Test driving my daughter's new bike turned into Percival from Snape Street, completely oblivious to anything around me. Suddenly I feel this thud on my left ear. It stopped me and I jumped off the bike to turn around to see what it could possibly be. A magpie was checking me out. Cycled home rubbing my ear to notice that it was bleeding. It now is tender and bruised. My daughter then went with my husband and was attacked on the opposite side of the park in Hannan Street. Luckily she was wearing a helmet and was NOT injured.
magpie swooped 3 times, each more aggressive than the last. The final swoop he actually landed on my backpack and clawed my head whilst squawking wildly, bearing in mind I was cycling at close to 20mph at the time to try and out run him. Managed to get under the motorway underpass otherwise I'm sure he would have been back for more!
Cycling south on Hannan Street beside Snape Park when hit on the side of my helmet. Then hit a second time and stopped under atree to see a magpie on the power lines watching me. I travel this route 3 times a week, but this was first attack.
On my way to anzac parade i was attacked by the magpie, he swooped me a few times from the back. When I was returning home the same magpie swooped me again, this time from the front. He even dropped my sunnies, it was very distressful.
He's been swooping everyone that walks past the surrounding streets. Do not come here!
While returning from a ride to Windsor from Baulkham Hills, I came across a very aggressive magpie at this point. Whereas, normally, I've known magpies to hit the shiny part of the helmet on top, this one tried to attack even from side! Normally they swoop, go up & come back again, but this one kept kept at my helmet. In the process of evading it, I fell down & suffered heavy bruises on my left arm & legs...broke my Nexus 5 I use for tracking my ride.
The ride and injuries Killy has shared on our facebook page @MagpieAlert
Have been attacked many times by this one very vicious Magpie at McGraths Hill, NSW near Bunnings/McDonalds. No injuries so far. The last time was particularly bad as it attacked me despite walking and not riding. I have cable ties on my helmet but this didn't deter the bird. I have now found a de-tour around this place.
