Magpie attack on Cyclist - 711 Sunshine Ave, Taylors Lakes VIC 3038
Saw a teenager on a bike get swooped repeatedly as he turned south onto Sunshine Avenue from Melton Keilor Road. Bird must live in the large tree near the corner there. Very aggressive followed him 50 metres making regular contact with his helmet

Magpie attack on Cyclist - 64 Burrinjuck Cres, Duffy ACT 2611
Aggressive attack from magpie just outside the Duffy Primary School, same magpie has been here for the past couple of years. Solid peck just under helmet behind the ear, no blood but a good bruise.

Magpie attack on Cyclist - 171 Wust Rd, Cooroy QLD 4563
Extremely aggressive! I was riding fast-ish as I knew there was one here that had 'clacked' my helmet a few weeks ago, but this was constantly landing on my back 8-9 times over 200m. It's slightly downhill heading into Cooroy which was why I was heading in that direction and not the other way.

Reported by:

Magpie attack on Walker - 1 Ponsonby St, West Hindmarsh SA 5007
Not aggressive, wasn't sure what it was at the time as I've never been swooped before. Next day another swoop about 50m away but that was more aggressive. Not sure it was same bird.

Reported by:

Magpie attack on Cyclist - 9 Burns Cres, Chiswick NSW 2046
Magpie chased me on my bike between Withers St and Bibby St, may be 400m or so. Multiple attacks. This bird is there year after year. Do not ride towards Withers St as it becomes gradually uphill and you will be a sitting duck.

Reported by:

Magpie attack on Cyclist - 8 Ingram Ave, Milperra NSW 2214
I was swooped several times whilst approaching lights at the intersection of Ingram Avenue and Henry Lawson Drive. The magpie sits above on electrical cables and poles. Once you cross the intersection you are clear from the magpie (but enter into another magpie's domain - another post, another story).

Swooping Magpie Safety Tips

Below is a short list of safety tips that we've collected over the past 5 seasons from our readers that may help with preventing and avoiding a swooping magpie attack. Visit the Swooping Magpie Safety Tips page a full list of tips!

  • If you are swooped while cycling get off of your bicycle, a large number of injuries reported on are caused by accidents where cyclists fall off during an attack.
  • Keep an ear open for their distinctive calls.
  • It is important to try to stay calm, if you panic and flap then this is more likely to appear as aggressive behaviour and provoke a further attack.
  • Wear sun glasses and with large wide-brimmed hat to protect your head and eyes.
  • Face the magpie they tend to attack from behind so facing them should avert an attack. Remember to keep facing the bird as you walk out of their territory some birds will swoop as soon as you look away.
  • Warn other people where the magpies are swooping locally by registering the swoops with along with a description on our national mappie map!

Magpies are protected throughout Australia, and it is against the law to kill the birds, collect their eggs, or harm their young. If you feel a magpie is a serious menace, it should be reported to your local council.

Jonny safe from cycling

I faced off against the M7 magpie and won!

I was on my usual 60km Sunday cycle route, cycling minding my own business when suddenly there was a snapping at my ear. I put my foot to the pedals and sped up, he came back for more and eventually gave up after about 150m.
