Magpie attack on Cyclist - 1 Glen Ave, East Geelong VIC 3219
A magpie swooped down out of a tree near the corner of the walking track and Holt Rd and chased a boy on a bike along Holt Rd. The magpie swooped the kid at least three or four times that I could see and I heard beak make contact on helmet. (I was on foot behind him. Thank you kid whoever you were. Took one for the team)

Magpie attack on Runner - 18 North Rd, Brighton VIC 3186
A magpie swooped me twice while jogging: I could hear it's beak snap and it flew close to my head. There were a few of them in trees a few houses down from the traffic lights, on the south side. Be careful!

Magpie attack on Cyclist - 143 Balwyn Rd, Balwyn VIC 3103
Riding west and was swooped once. Only a gentle swoop. Interestingly, wasn't swooped going east. Perhaps, as I was riding more slowly uphill, magpie didn't feel I was as threatening

Magpie attack on Walker - 47 Arcadia Way, Eltham North VIC 3095
I was leaving and light run/brisk walk since i'm catching up the bus when a magpie came flying fast towards me then made a diversion.. I didn't realised he turned around and hit me at the back of my head. I was shocked by the force that i fell hard on my butt. Luckily he didn't made another 2nd attempt.. I always see this magpie around the street and this is the first time he attacked me.. I suspect his nest is in front of our house.

Magpie attack on Cyclist - 43 Glenrock Parade, North Lakes QLD 4509
This has been happening the last week and I keep forgeting to reroute on my bike. I only went 5 metres into the area and it was waiting for me. When I realized my mistake I turned around and it followed and swooped hitting my helmet and a small scratch. I suspect it may be two of them working together! I saw a lady walking on the sidewalk with an umbrella and now understand why! This one covers between the two round abouts - where the bus stops is.

Swooping Magpie Safety Tips

Below is a short list of safety tips that we've collected over the past 5 seasons from our readers that may help with preventing and avoiding a swooping magpie attack. Visit the Swooping Magpie Safety Tips page a full list of tips!

  • If you are swooped while cycling get off of your bicycle, a large number of injuries reported on magpiealert.com are caused by accidents where cyclists fall off during an attack.
  • Keep an ear open for their distinctive calls.
  • It is important to try to stay calm, if you panic and flap then this is more likely to appear as aggressive behaviour and provoke a further attack.
  • Wear sun glasses and with large wide-brimmed hat to protect your head and eyes.
  • Face the magpie they tend to attack from behind so facing them should avert an attack. Remember to keep facing the bird as you walk out of their territory some birds will swoop as soon as you look away.
  • Warn other people where the magpies are swooping locally by registering the swoops with along with a description on our national mappie map!

Magpies are protected throughout Australia, and it is against the law to kill the birds, collect their eggs, or harm their young. If you feel a magpie is a serious menace, it should be reported to your local council.

Jonny safe from cycling

I faced off against the M7 magpie and won!

I was on my usual 60km Sunday cycle route, cycling minding my own business when suddenly there was a snapping at my ear. I put my foot to the pedals and sped up, he came back for more and eventually gave up after about 150m.
